I am a trained forest botanist. For past 26 years i have been working in the 50- hectare and one-hectare permanent forest dynamics plots established in and around dry forests of Mudumalai . I have been monitoring the phenoloy of trees in both dry as well as montane forests. I also work on the dendro-ecology of dry and coniferous forests of India. Also i have been actively involved in other research activities of plant ecology in Prof. Sukumar’s lab.

I joined IISc in 1986. I have been involved in several vegetation surveys of south Indian forests. Currently i am working as field botanist in Prof. Sukumar’s team and have been assisting in various forest ecology long-term Projects. I was involved in the establishment of long term monitoring, forest dynamic plots at Mudumalai by the Center for Tropical Forest Science in collabration with Centre for Ecological Sceinces, IISc. And ever since i have been involved in regular monitoring of these plots. Also, in order to understand the effects of global change on forests and predict future forest carbon budgets we have been measuring the Carbon fluxes in the forest ecosystem.

I joined Prof. Sukumar's reasearch team in October 2010 as a project assistant. I am currently identifying elephants of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve based on their height, sex, age and other markings unique to them (such as cuts in the earlobes, and tail, temporal and buccal depression, tusk length and shape, the presence of tumours on the different parts of the body, and depigmentation). This enables us to deconstruct the population structure of elephants and also understand the aspects of elephant demography like sex ratios, fecundity, mortality, and social hierarchies.

I got an opportunity to join Prof. R. Sukumar's Lab in June 2013 as a Junior Research Fellow in a project sponsored by ISRO-STC IISc cell on mapping land use/land cover changes and monitoring forest degradation in Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve extending to 7 & 8 Elephant Reserve. My research interests are multi-disciplinary and span broadly in areas of landscape dynamics and quantifying landuse /landcover changes. I am strongly motivated towards linking field-oriented research in understanding landscape level changes made by human and natural drivers and understanding trends in the spatial patterns of vegetation greenness (NDVI and EVI as proxy), rainfall and temperature in the landscape. I have been actively involved in research activities relating to Remote Sensing & GIS work in various projects of the lab .

I am a Project Assistant working to understand the genotypic aspects of and patterns in conflict between Asian elephants and people. I am also studying age-related growth and morphology of Asian elephants. I love theatre, music and literature, and often happen to bother my labmates by playing alt rock too loud in lab.
